Email Blast — January 9, 2010

Dear Friend,

We have a week coming up filled with events that we thought you would like to know about.

First off, on Monday, January 11, the trial of Proposition 8 gets underway in federal court in San Francisco. Judge Vaughn Walker has agreed to allow the limited use of cameras in the courtroom, a decision that rankled supporters of Prop. 8. The tape-delayed proceedings can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/usdccand.

If you're an early riser, join the folks at Marriage Equality USA for a Sunrise Vigil for Hope and Marriage Equality beginning at 6:30 am in the Phillip Burton Federal Building Plaza, 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco. There will be speakers and live entertainment; please visit http://www.marriageequality.org/index.php?page=event for more details. Don't forget a jacket!

Also, on January 11, the U.S. Census Bureau will be coming to the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center for their first South Bay meeting with our local community. The meeting will take place from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Grand Ballroom at the DeFrank Center, 938 The Alameda, San José. It didn't all necessarily start with Stonewall! On Wednesday, January 13, the San José/Peninsula chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will be hosting a screening of a new documentary, "On These Shoulders We Stand," chronicling the lives of eleven LGBT elders combating homophobia in post-World War II Los Angeles. See how their efforts kick-started our modern civil rights movement.

Note: This event will be presented as part of PFLAG's regular monthly meeting. The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm. Come show your appreciation for a wonderful organization that has done so much for our community.

Finally, Friday, January 15, will see another movie screening, this time celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The documentary "Brother Outsider," presenting the life and times of Bayard Rustin, will be shown in the 2nd floor conference rooms of the Billy DeFrank Center, 938 The Alameda, San José, at 7:00 pm. Rustin (1912–1987) is still a relatively unknown hero of the civil rights movement. A disciple of Gandhi, he was a mentor and teacher to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., lived his life as an openly gay man, and was the architect of the historic 1963 March on Washington.

Come and help honor the legacies of some of our African-American leaders: Rustin, King and Billy DeFrank himself, and renew your DeFrank Center membership for 2010.
