SOME BACKGROUND into why we are calling Maine:
The Maine legislature approved full marriage equality.
The governor of Maine signed the bill.
All is great in Maine, right?
Not so fast. The "people's veto" affords the voters of Maine the opportunity to override this historic legislation before it ever is actually enacted. Unfortunately, it appears that they will have enough signatures to get this on the November ballot. Sounds similar to Prop 8, albeit almost 3000 miles away.
A coalition of local grass-roots organizations, including Marriage Equality Silicon Valley and the Santa Clara County Equality Team of the Courage Campaign, are coming together to support the efforts of EqualityMaine to ensure that the No on 1: Protect Maine Equality Campaign wins in the fall. EqualityMaine celebrated 25 years of progress for Maine's LGBT community earlier this year. Let's make sure that there is no repeat of Prop 8 this year and that they can continue to celebrate come election day. Our local coalition will be hosting remote phone banks and other events in support of the Maine No on 1 campaign throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall.
Please try to come for the entire time as we will be providing training during the first hour, three hours of phone time and about a half hour of debrief. No experience required.
As this is an entirely volunteer effort, we are asking all attendees to bring a cell phone and charger, and maybe some drinks or snacks to share. Unfortunately, we will not have extra phones available.
