Email Blast — May 26, 2009
Dear Friends of Marriage Equality,
While we are pleased that, as was widely expected, the California Supreme Court unanimously decided to let stand the 18,000 same-sex marriages that took place last year in California, we are deeply saddened that the court voted 6-1 to allow the voter-approved Proposition 8 to stand, thereby preventing any further same-sex marriages. Only Justice Carlos Moreno, the court's lone democrat, dissented from the majority opinion.
To demonstrate our disappointment at the court's allowing the mob to vote on the civil rights of a minority — indeed, taking away what the court just last year called a "fundamental right" — we will gather, as planned, at the Plaza de César Chávez in downtown San José this evening, 6:00 P.M., May 26, 2009. From the plaza, we will start marching toward San José City Hall around 6:30 P.M., where we will rally and express our outrage at the court's decision to uphold the ban on same-sex marriage.
Although this is a time of great sorrow for all of us, we must look through our sorrow and develop a strategy for decisive action. In a press release, MESV member Steve Kline said, "This is a very sad day for California and equality for all. However, the struggle will continue and this decision will be overturned by the voters who truly believe in equal rights for all. Out of our tears and anger will come action: the action to make equality for all once again a fundamental principle in California."
Please join us this evening to demonstrate your own personal disappointment at the court's decision, and make known how this decision affects you directly. We encourage you to be creative, and bring big, bold, brightly colored signs bearing your own thoughts on this decision. Be sure too to get the word out to your friends and family to come downtown and support you. Please keep in mind that, although we are very upset at the court's decision, our demonstration will remain peaceful, non-violent, and non-confrontational. Being angry and loud about it is fine; violence is not.
See you downtown this evening!
Yours in solidarity,
